‘Plus (when you buy one of my t-shirts) you get high.’ ~Chris Haueter
The ‘BJJ changes lives’ idea might be good marketing, but the fact is, martial arts aren’t going to psychologically give you something you don’t already have.
It goes without saying that evolution within BJJ is an inside-out process as well.
I’ve learned some of Eric’s game for example, through diligent study, as him handing it down to me from the mountain top would have bored both of us.
As astutely noted by Josh in the comment section of preceding post (individuality), and G$ has observed after working with both Eric and I privately, we are now pretty consistent theory-wise, but usually have different ways of expressing the same point.
This represents principle-based teaching and comprehension.
I point this out because often what people call Jiu-Jitsu and/or pyschological change translates to people parroting an individual likely just as lost as they are:

Eric’s theory based style provides some ruling moments.
Instead of showing you the moves you get the main theory building block motion, and then he will rattle off a load of possibilities. I love that part because you don’t have to focus on the individual moves and scenarios but just get to see the range of possibilities that spread out from a concept. I call him in that part Fire Marshall Bill.
Shayyyy the guy raises into thisshhh position, LEMME SHOW YAH SHUMSHIN, BAM!!!!

Let me officially amend the post, by writing that amazing BJJ instruction can change your BJJ life if you show up, listen, and take ownership for how much or little you take away.
It’s funny, but even though Eric played with me when we started doing privates, it took about 6-12 months before I started to ‘hear’ him.
The problem was I had so many concepts about BJJ, I didn’t have room for deeper, principle rooted ideas.
Guess that’s why I rail on patting yourself and others on the back uneccessarily, and judging skill based on how you stack up against others in the academy.
What it did in my case was reinforce surface level understandings that were obviously hard to let go of.
I had been teaching BJJ for awhile, been praised for my coaching, and knew things dammit. ;o)
Dude your Fire Marshal Bill text was funnier than the video. Awesome!
